Sustainability

Compunetix aims to meet sustainability commitments throughout all facets of our business. We are dedicated to designing and manufacturing innovative, high quality products and solutions with minimal environmental impact.

Manufacturing and Operations

At Compunetix, we work to minimize our environmental impact and comply with all environmental standards and regulations. We comply with the Restrictions of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) Directive to eliminate or significantly reduce the use of lead in our products. In our printed circuit board area of the facility, we have many lead-free machines and have turned to alternative non-hazardous materials to manufacture our products.

About the RoHS Directive

The Restriction of Hazardous Substance Directive or RoHS requires that the use of certain hazardous materials that are commonly used in electronics and electronic equipment be restricted severely. The six hazardous materials restricted by this directive are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ether. The RoHS directive went into effect on July 1, 2006.

Expectations and Efficiency

Compunetix expects that our suppliers will also adhere to all industry environmental standards and use the best commercial practices and product safety standards.

We strive to enhance efficiency in our operations at Compunetix, recognizing that excess materials and waste have direct impacts on the environment around us. Efficiency in our facilities also means that our customers receive high quality products in a timely manner.

Solid Waste and Water Management

Compunetix measures and records all solid waste generated and all water consumed by our facilities. We aim to properly manage all disposal and recycle processes of both waste and water and cut down on our generation and usage.

Paper, Plastic, and Aluminum

Compunetix is partnered with Waste Management to collect and recycle magazines, office paper, newspapers, paperboard, junk mail, catalogs and phonebooks, along with plastic bottles and containers #1-7 and aluminum cans. Receptacles are available in all building mailrooms for paper collection and on the first and third floor for bottles and cans. Recycling these items avoids the energy consumption and other environmental impacts associated with harvesting trees for wood pulp, accessing the oil needed to make plastic, or mining the metal and sand needed to make cans and bottles. Waste Management pledges to increase waste-based energy production, increase the volume of recyclable materials we process, to invest in cleaner technologies and to protect more wildlife habitat across North America; Compunetix is pleased to help contribute to these goals for a greener future.

We also currently have 12 Shred-it consoles throughout our main building in Monroeville, Pennsylvania in an effort not only protect our security needs, but also save trees and recycle the paper we use. So far this year, these 12 consoles have allowed us to save 51 trees. On their website, Shred-it mentions the additional benefits to using their recycling program: “According to industry estimates, in addition to saving trees, every ton of recycled paper uses 64% less energy, 50% less water and causes 74% less air pollution than the same quantity of paper from virgin wood pulp.”

Metal, Solder, Cleaning Agents, and Other Waste

Compunetix has multiple contracts with businesses to dispose of or recycle waste generated from our main building, as it is important to us to dispose of our materials in as an environmentally-friendly way as possible. Our electronics are recycled and our unused/reclaimed metals are sent to a scrap yard to be used in the future. We reclaim our solder waste, evaporate the water, and use a waste handling company to dispose of the sludge material and all cleaning agents used in our facilities. The remainder of our minimal waste is picked up monthly by a trusted service company in order to ensure that it is appropriately discarded. Our trash generation decreased by 4% between 2010 and 2011 and we hope to continue with this trend.

Water

At our main building, we use a water tank to recirculate the water in order to heat and air condition the building. The water is continually used, as it flows through a looped pipe in the building. Our water usage significantly decreased in 2011 from previous years, including a 13.8% decrease from 2010 to 2011, reflecting our aim to conserve water in our building.

Packaging

With safety in mind, Compunetix packages products depending on what is required to protect and cushion the products. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection packaging is used to ensure safe transportation and storage of our electronic products. Boxes are marked “reusable container” and we encourage customers to reuse the boxes or return them to us so that we may reuse them. We also work to meet the needs of our customers and will pack products according to their specifications, if given. We hope to use only what is necessary to ensure products are delivered safely to minimize waste associated with packaging materials.

Quality

At Compunetix, we are committed to providing quality products to our customers. We have earned the latest ISO 9001:2015 certification for our quality management systems and constantly work to maintain these standards. Our quality policy states: Compunetix is committed to satisfying its key stakeholders, including customers, employees, and stockholders through the following:

  • Continually improving products, services, performance, and QMS
  • Conforming to customer, internal, and regulatory requirements
  • Communicating effectively with customers, employees, and suppliers

We recognize that our Conferencing Service Provider (CSP) and enterprise customers depend on our products and solutions to sustain their businesses and our government customers rely on our technology for secure communication in mission critical situations. Consistently reliable and high-quality products are vital to ensuring our customers’ needs are met.

Community Activities and Involvement

Compunetix invests both time and finances into community development activities in the area in which we operate, as we are dedicated to being involved in our local community. Our Director of Corporate Communications is on the board of the Chamber of Commerce for Monroeville, Pennsylvania where we are located. Compunetix financially invests in the Monroeville Chamber of Commerce through membership dues and sponsorship of events. We also have a corporate commitment to encourage employee involvement in community activities, such as Celebrate Monroeville, a local community event. Compunetix is also very involved with Pittsburgh Tech Council, as our CEO is one of the founding members. Compunetix supports the Tech Council through sponsoring the radio show and online magazine, attending events, appearing on the radio show, and paying membership dues.

Carbon Footprint

Compunetix collaboration platforms and solutions allow our employees, conferencing service provider customers, and enterprise customers to communicate and collaborate virtually. Telecommunication is not only more convenient than physical travel, but it also drastically diminishes our carbon emissions produced from airplanes, automobiles, trains, and other means of transportation. According to a carbon footprint calculator, it is estimated that a round trip flight from New York to Los Angeles emits over 1,500 pounds (0.69 metric tons) of CO2. Imagine the impact of carbon dioxide on our atmosphere without the technology of telecommunication. Compunetix is committed to providing our customers with high quality and rich feature products to increase effective, efficient and environmentally-friendly collaboration.
